tuesday songs

performed by Kai Widmann

It's been my new year's resolution for 2011 to spend more time making/recording/mixing music. To force myself into doing so, I decided to put up this page and post one song I recorded every tuesday.
After eight months I couldn't go on with this. Having a stressful job and a family leaves not enough room to post on a weekly basis. But I will continue posting songs every once in a while. If you don't want to miss a song, you can follow me on SoundCloud or subscribe to my RSS-Feed.

Since 2021 I'm part of a band again, Fahmi Friedrich Widmann, check our LinkTree page to see what we're up to.

Song 4: Under The Milky Way (The Church)

25 January 2011 - I'll be moving in a few days, so the home studio is stowed away in boxes. No new recording today, but a song from the archive. I started recording an album of cover songs for my wife in december 2004 to give to her as a christmas present. But it didn't get finished, so she had to wait another year. So this track took one year to record and another year to get a final mix ;)

Kai Widmann: vocals, guitars, hammond, bass

recorded December 2004 + December 2005, mixed December 2006

music + lyrics by Steve Kilbey & Karin Jansson

originally released on The Church - Starfish, 1988

Song 3: In Search Of A Rose (The Waterboys)

18 January 2011 - A short, simple, plain and sweet folk song. And my first take on recording multiple instruments (see below) for a tuesday song.

Kai Widmann: vocals, guitar, mandolin, tin whistle, accordion

recorded 17+18 January 2011

music + lyrics by Mike Scott

originally released on The Waterboys - Room To Roam, 1990

Song 2: Fugitive Motel (Elbow)

11 January 2011 - Elbow is one of my favourite bands. Very hard to cover, but this one is quite nice with just guitar and voice. Some more songs by Elbow will show up here within the next few months.

Kai Widmann: vocals, guitar

recorded 11 January 2011

music by Elbow, lyrics by Guy Garvey

originally released on Elbow - Cast of Thousands, 2003

I my opinion this version is even better than the original.
I just love it!

Song 1: Blue Always Finds Me (Hotel Lights)

4 January 2011 - First one, first take. This was written by Darren Jessee, drummer of Ben Folds Five, who now has his own band "Hotel Lights".
During a recording session in May 2012 I added the "Johnny Cash Style" piano. Playing the same note throughout the chorus was perfectly done on his version of "Hurt" and I always wanted to hear something like that on "Blue Always Finds Me".

Kai Widmann: vocals, guitar, piano

recorded 3 January 2011, piano added May 2012, mixed May 2012

music + lyrics by Darren Jessee

originally released on Hotel Lights - Firecracker People, 2008
